Within the Startup Law, Spain has launched a new visa aimed at international teleworkers. The so-called “digital nomad” visa is open to a wide variety of remote workers and has already spiked the interest in the US. Google Searches from Americans for “digital nomad visa Spain” grew by 66% in January 2023.
The digital nomad visa is a residence permit for up to 5 years, counts for permanent residence and nationality and allows to move freely throughout the EU.
Eligibility for Digital Nomad Visa
Foreigners carrying out remote work or professional activities using computers or other telecommunication devices are eligible to apply for this visa.
This visa is for nationals of countries outside of the European Economic Area (EU countries + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)
The individual is self-employed or employed by a company outside of Spain.
The individual must show proof of being qualified to work in their field (university degree or work experience)
Have no criminal record in Spain or anywhere else for 5 years prior to the application.
Have sufficient funds to support the stay in Spain. Roughly twice Spanish mininum income or around $2680 per month. In case of spouses or families joining the application higher incomes are needed. For a family of four monthly earnings should be around $4350 per month.
